The IH BET course is run completely online and contains 30 modules divided into 3 strands: basic business awareness, professional skills, and methodology and materials:

Structure & Assessment

There is no assessed teaching in this course. Candidates submit a post-course reflective assignment and a portfolio of seven tasks taken from the homework set in Strands 2 and 3 of the course. The final portfolio is moderated by the IH Assessment Unit. The course is run by qualified and experienced Business English teachers who hold an online tutoring qualification. The grading of the course is Pass or Fail.

Time Commitment

This is a 50-hour course if taken face to face. On average participants spend a minimum of 7 hours per week online and doing tasks.

CAM – Certificate in Advanced Methodology

The International House Certificate in Advanced Methodology (CAM) serves two main audiences. It offers the high level of methodological input which many teachers seek for reasons of personal self-development and many teachers need as preparation for a Diploma level qualification such as the Cambridge DELTA.

Because of the high level of input involved, the course is aimed at teachers with at least one year of full-time experience (600 clock hours of teaching).

The focus of the course is General English to Adults:

To develop teachers? theoretical knowledge of teaching and make them more informed practitioners.
To develop teachers? practical teaching ability and develop their self-analytical skills to make them more reflective practitioners.
To raise teachers? awareness of what they can expect from a diploma level course, and give them that skills necessary to succeed when studying a diploma level course.

More specifically, the course aims to:

develop Course Participants (CPs?) ability to identify useful articles, extracts, and other documents and to read them critically;
encourage CPs to read key articles, chapters, etc, to lighten the load on a Diploma level course;
encourage in-depth reflection on CPs? past and current practice;
encourage critical debate on teaching practice among CPs and their peers;
encourage discussion across different teaching contexts;
encourage professionalism in CPs? approach to their job and personal development;
develop CPs? ability to analyse language for teaching purposes in increased depth;
widen CPs? approaches to dealing with authentic and self-made texts;
provide CPs with a historical perspective with regard to teaching approaches;
encourage CPs to experiment with different approaches and reflect on the experience so they will move towards a position of ?principled eclecticism?;
encourage teamwork among professional practitioners.
